Many runners don’t understand how the gym can benefit them, believing strength training will slow them down or make them muscle-bound. The truth is, appropriate and relevant resistance exercises will actually improve your running; to be a good runner takes more than running alone.
Running is a high impact activity. This puts mechanical stress on the skeletal system and muscles of the entire body – not just the legs. Therefore, it makes sense to train the body as a whole, making it more robust and efficient.
If you wish to run safely, muscles need to be conditioned and limber; otherwise they will begin to fight back.
Resistance training increases bone density and enhances the thickness and strength of the tendons and ligaments. It improves posture, joint stability and co-ordination. With lean muscle-gain metabolism is also raised, especially at rest. All work to compliment your running.
