25-11-2017 – New parkrun Course Record for Charlie
Congratulations Charlie Grice (Brighton Phoenix) on securing a new course record this morning at Brighton & Hove parkrun.
On this typical autumnal morning, the conditions in Hove Park were not ideal. It was slippery underfoot, and Charlie also had to weave his way around a crowded course.
Despite the odds of a course record not being in his favour, Charlie ran 14:25… 3 seconds faster than the previous record, held by Andy Baddeley, which dates back to 24 August 2013. Nice one Charlie!
Anyone who doesn’t know him, if you’d like to know a bit about his background, check out our interview with Charlie Grice from back in 2014..

4-7-2017 – Heroic attempt by Dan at the World 24hr Champs
There was an heroic attempt, by Brighton’s Dan Lawson, over the weekend, to break new ground for a GB athlete at the World 24 hour Champs in Dublin, with the aim of breaking the British record.
Having, last October, won the European Championship in Albi, the conditions this weekend in Dublin were sadly not in Dan’s favour. The constant concrete surface combined with the camber of the road, unfortunately left Dan with severe pain in his right shin and legs, making it a struggle to walk in the latter stages.
Unable to complete the final few hours, Dan amazingly (according to provisional results) still completed 140 miles and finished in 38th position.
And Dan already has his eye on another possible British record attempt in Taiwan in December!
26-6-2017 – It’s Bronze for Joe!
Congratulations to Arena 80’s Joe Ashley, who yesterday secured 3rd place in the 800m at the British Masters Champs in Birmingham. Joe also earned himself a new PB… 2:04:12.

Existing course record holder Paul Martelletti with new women’s course record holder Eleanor Davis.
What a fantastic day on Brighton sea front.
The strong winds didn’t deter over 8,000 runners, including a couple of hundred from RunBrighton, who completed the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon, yesterday morning.
And there was a new women’s course record for Eleanor Davis of Newquay Road Runners, with a time of 1:14:26.
The men’s race was won, in a nail-biting finish, by Jonathan Tipper of Kent AC, in 1:08:37.

2-2-2017 – Brooks ‘Brighton Half Marathon’ Tops for South African Cycle Group
I think most of us would agree that it is too easy to forget how privileged we are, living in a westernised society. And, as runners, perhaps we take for granted owning an extensive range of lovely technical kit that we think is never enough, whilst, for others, having just one nice top is considered a luxury.
After last February’s Vitality Brighton Half Marathon, I was lucky enough to be given a load of leftover finisher tee shirts that were surplus to requirements, to see if I could put them to good use.
I spoke with one of our runners, Andy Kemp, who works for Travellers Worldwide. They organise volunteer projects overseas, many of which are in deprived communities. Andy felt he could probably find a good home for these tees.
Well, that was almost a year ago. These things take time! I’m now delighted that they have indeed found a good home.
A cycle club in a local township in South Africa now adorns these technical, Brooks tee shirts, as their new official kit, with pride.
The handover of 30 of the tee shirts was made, last week, by Sharon Dreyer, South African Country Manager for Travellers Worldwide, to coach Paulus of the Knysna Sport School NPO based in Sharon’s home town.
As well as coaching soccer and other sports, Paulus is also the coach for the cycling groups.
The cycling groups are outreach programs and are split into sub-groups according to age. The group in the photograph are young men ranging from late teens to early 20s, and are from impoverished communities.
Many of them are still in high school and others, having left school, are unemployed. 20-year-old Brandon Williams told Sharon that he rides from his home, quite some distance away, three times a week, to join in with the cycling outreach program. Aside from the fact that he enjoys it, it keeps him busy and focused on something positive, unlike many youths in the area that end up getting involved in bad activities.
All in all, the cycling outreach program sees 90 youths a week in the different cycling sessions.
The Knysna Sport School was established 22 years ago and their work in sports development makes a huge impact on the town’s youngsters. For the crèche-age children, they run a fun ‘Kids in Traffic’ program, complete with a ‘street road system’, various road signs and bicycles. This program is extremely important to teach them road safety. From primary to high school level, they are involved with soccer, cricket, golf, hockey, athletics, table tennis and cycling.
Sharon says “I cannot praise this extremely well run organization enough with their hard working and motivated staff. It is a pleasure to partner up with them wherever possible as they are making such a difference in our town. Apart from coaching sports and skills like leadership and teamwork, they keep our youth busy with sport instead of hanging around on the street and, at worse, getting involved with criminal activities.”

10-1-2017 – Brighton & Hove’s 5th parkrun to go ahead
AS you may be aware, there has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes to try and get funding for a brand new parkrun in the city.. in Peacehaven.
Well, great news.. funding has just been just been granted for both the main 5k event and the junior parkrun.
It’s early days, and likely nothing much will happen for another few months. But this is exciting news for all who have been involved.
Congratulations especially to Dawn Paul, who has worked tirelessly to get this off the ground and been instrumental in securing the funding.
If you would like more information, or would like to get involved with the organising team, please contact parkrun ambassador Mark Brocklehurst at firstname.lastname@example.org

17-12-2016 – Brighton Half Youth Races
Brighton Half Marathon are scheduled to close entries for their Youth Races by the end of December, or sooner if capacity is reached.
So far, there has been lots of interest in the younger age groups, but there are still lots of places for 15-17 year olds – and with prizes of £50/£40/£30 sports vouchers for placing in boys & girls races, that’s not a bad incentive for young athletes!
Entries can be accessed by clicking here.
Congratulations to Darryl Hards (Brighton Phoenix), 1st male, and Emily Hutchinson (Arena 80), 1st female, in yesterday’s Mince Pie 10.
Darryl’s time was 57:54, whilst Emily, who recently joined RunBrighton as an ambassador, took exactly a minute off Katy Moore’s (Brighton & Hove AC) 2010 record, to finish in 66:31.
Chichester’s James Baker still holds the men’s record of 56:34.

Huge congratulations to Brighton & Hove AC runner Kevin Rojas.
Kev only started running properly in 2011, with RunBrighton. The following year we made him a RunBrighton ambassador. And yesterday he donned an England vest for the first time, representing his country in the Toronto Marathon.
On a breezy course, and in high humidity, Kev was the first Englishman home out of a team of five, in 2hrs24.

9-5-2016 – Heroes v Villains
Photo: Matt Bartsch, Riptide
It’s that time of year again, when Brightonians up and down the city dust of their Superhero or villain costumes and think about heading to the seafront for another epic battle between the good and evil! It can only be Heroes Run v Villains Run, in aid of Pass It On Africa.
The concept is simple: On race day, the teams will line up against each other and go head to head in a straight race to the finish line. In both the 5km and the 10km race, the first team to reach 100 finishers will win the day. You don’t have to be an athlete to take part, so the event is a fantastic opportunity for all the family to get involved. As well as the 5k and 10k distances for the grown up Wonder Women and Lex Luthers among you, there is also the ever-popular Kids 500m Dash plus a Youth Mile Race. Every runner will receive a medal and there will be prizes for the best costumes in all categories. Outfits can be shop- bought or homemade, but it’s best to think of the practicalities of running in it before getting too carried away with the design!
The teams are also going head to head in fund-raising for Pass It On Africa. Hero or Villain, one thing that everyone can agree on is the importance of their cause.
“In 2016 we aim to complete our 3 year development project at the Nyantonzi Primary School in Masindi, Uganda. The objective is to develop the school into a sustainable and well-performing institution where all the children, girls and boys alike, receive a quality education in a safe and secure environment. ”
Matt Lambert – Pass It On Africa co-founder
“Last year’s race raised £18,711 for Pass It On Africa, every penny of which went to the Nyantonzi School Project. The charity is run entirely voluntarily by a handful of friends, so the race entry fee covers the annual charity running costs plus the cost of the race itself. This is how 100% of fundraising can go straight to supporting education in Africa.
“Pass It On Africa aim to raise £20,000 at this years race. To achieve this they are asking each runner to try and raise £20 sponsorship. If this is achieved, you will not only enable over 800 young people to achieve a quality primary education but you will also help them help themselves out of poverty.”
So, whether you wish to save the day as a hero or ruin the day as a villain, sign up for a fun day out, and at the same time help put a smile on the face of a child in Africa.
Brighton Heroes Run Vs Villains Run takes place on Sunday 15 May 2016.

2-5-2016 – Victory for Pompairac at Three Forts
Congratulations to RunBrighton’s David Pompairac, who won the Three Forts Marathon yesterday.
The Frenchman was also the fastest RunBrighton runner of the day at Brighton Marathon last month.
28-4-2016 – Allison Benton selected for Brooks Inspire Daily programme
Congratulations to Allison Benton for being selected to join the prestigious Brooks Inspire Daily programme in recognition of the superb coaching that she has been providing to all the athletes in her Brighton-based group (‘The Allison Benton Training Group’).
Allison was one of just 22 coaches across the UK to have been selected to join the programme by Brooks, based on nominations and applications from athletes. The coaches selected by Brooks to be part of the programme are described as having the “innate ability to motivate anyone they meet” and “going above and beyond to help others achieve their running goals”.
20-4-2016 – The Brighton Chicken Run, Sunday 24th April 2016, 10am, Hove Park
The Chicken Run turns 3 on Sunday 24th April and, like most three year olds, it’s still refusing to do as it’s told, still happiest when wearing ridiculous costumes in public and still prefers a Chocolate Easter egg for breakfast! The guy who set up the event, James Macdonald, is half of the team that came up with one of the cities longest running charity events, The Heroes Run. When we asked him….Chicken running….earning Easter eggs…why? He told us this:
“There were 3 main reasons why I wanted to put on a Chicken Run event. Firstly, anything that makes people laugh or smile is a really good thing and being passed by a sea of chicken runners is a tough thing to ignore. Secondly I wanted to create a fundraising event that really supports charities with smaller budgets. I do this by charging charities less for their places than the public rate and finally if you can encourage people to get into a healthier lifestyle through running and maybe they then start to earn their Chocolate Easter eggs then that might also be a positive thing.”
Since the event started in 2013 it has raised about £8,000 for 15 charities. James is hoping that this year’s event will raise considerably more for lots more charities and is saying why not really make a charity’s day by contacting them after the event to say something along the lines of “I did this Chicken Run thing had a whip round in the office and raised this money for you.”
He is also hoping that this year’s event might manage to set an unofficial World Record for the most people running around dressed as Chickens. To his knowledge no such record presently exists but he has the goal of 200 Chicken Runners as the target to aim for.
There are a number of lovely supportive event partners who all do their bit to help make the day possible. The biggest thank you must go to the event’s main sponsor Nando’s, for their ongoing support and for their goody bags which amongst other things always include a half chicken voucher for every race finisher!
Included in the race entry is your own chicken costume, a well earned race medal, an Easter egg and of course your Nando’s goody bag.
Everyone who signs up is also entitled to one week’s free British Military Fitness membership at their local BMF class. Here’s what a few of last year’s chicken runners had to say about the event.
“A great time was had and we will definitely be back next year with friends in tow.” (Penny, Worthing)
“Excellent run! Great organisation. Half the egg scoffed already. Bring on next year.” (Hannah, Brighton)
“Thank you so much for another fun event. I’m training for the Brighton Marathon so as you can imagine I’m sick to death of early Sunday mornings and long runs! The Chicken Run was just what I needed! I must admit, at first I did wonder what on earth I, a middle aged woman was doing standing alone in a damp park in a chicken outfit but once the warm up started I forgot all about it. I even got a personal best time!” (Lucy, Brighton)
James hopes that the event becomes well established in the city and also helps lots of charities to fund their projects. He also hopes that people who may often be a bit turned off by the idea of running, sign up, have a really great time and realise that this whole being fit and running around a bit isn’t just, for fit people who run around a bit.
So why not sign up today and do something genuinely unique this year. They event organisers can’t guarantee that the experience will turn you into an overnight running legend but it will be lots of fun and this year you will definitely have earnt that Easter egg.

18-4-2016 – Now I AM a runner!
A delightful email from Angie Bowles, first time with RunBrighton this winter, tells just one of many wonderful stories that have emerged out of yesterday’s Brighton Marathon. But this one summarises exactly what RunBrighton is all about…
“You, Mr Bannister, are in serious trouble!
I started out last year with a random question “does everyone have a marathon in them?” Entered, stressed about it, then I found RunBrighton…..
What an experience this has been. From the first week of the winter training when I couldn’t run for more than 2 minutes at a time (& honestly wasn’t sure if I wanted to), I have not only completed (and enjoyed) a marathon but entered to do it again next year! My life is already full – I haven’t got time to take on a seriously time consuming commitment- I expected to try it & then move on.
Within hours of completing yesterday I was discussing which Autumn half to target & what I might be able to achieve with another year’s training. Stupid! I have no more time. “I am not a runner” !
Seriously though, I want you to know just how much I have appreciated RunBrighton and your interest in a “non runner” exploring running. I am staggered by what I did yesterday and by how much I enjoyed it. More amazing than anything was hearing my 19 year old daughter (as she met me at the finish) saying “I want to do that too”! As a parent, to inspire your child with the belief that anything is possible if you are willing to work hard enough, is priceless. She made an entry last night.
Mike, thank you. This has been an amazing experience. Now I AM a runner, I am just so curious to see what comes next. I am looking forward to the summer season.
With love & thanks
